The Philadelphia Long Family were a group of investors seeking access and property on the Elk River. According to a 1914 plat of this property, John Long reserved 32 acres of Whiteoak Farm in 1905. In 1912, Mr. Long constructed a five story wood shingle beach tower house, a tea house, and a carriage house. The three buildings represent early recreational structures along the tidal Elk River. The most unusual of the three is a 5 story structure, which is a combination boat house and residence, located at sea level and is known as "The Tower House".
